Eudora is a mail program for the Macintosh. It uses the POP3 and SMTP protocols to receive and send mail from a network-connected Macintosh.
System Requirements:
Macintosh System 6.0.4 or later. (7.0 is fine.)
MacTCP (or the Communications Toolbox & Communications Tools)
POP3 and SMTP servers.
A suitable POP3 server for UNIX systems ("popper") is available by anonymous ftp to ftp.cc.berkeley.edu, in the pub/popper subdirectory. I suggest the 1.831 version.
If you have suggestions or comments regarding Eudora, please send them by electronic mail to the author of Eudora, Steve Dorner, s-dorner@uiuc.edu. Your suggestions are valuable, so don't be reticent. If you have questions about Eudora, do try the manual and Q&A stacks first; if they fail you, let me know. I *always* answer my mail; if you send me mail and don't hear from me, it's because I couldn't get mail back to you.

UPDATE STUFF
If you would like to receive announcements about updates to Eudora, send mail to "listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu". The text of the message should consist of "sub eudora your-first-name your-last-name". Be sure you don't put anything else in the body of the message, including any sort of "signature".
If you get tired of being on the list (though I promise to keep traffic low), send mail with the line "unsub eudora" to "listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu".
Copies of Eudora may be obtained by anonymous ftp to ftp.cso.uiuc.edu, in the mac/eudora subdirectory. Copies are also available from the CSO Resource Center, 1420 DCL MC 256, 1304 W. Springfield, Urbana, IL 61801, (217) 244-6261. If you bring your own disks (3 800K disks for the entire package), there is no charge. Printed copies of the manual are also available for $4. The disks and manual may also be ordered by mail; just send a check for $15.
NOTE FOR System 6.0.7 USERS:
If you want to install the Communications Toolbox, use the "Network Installer" diskette that came with your System 6.0.7 distribution. Ask it to install the Communications Toolbox.
NOTES FOR System 7 USERS:
Eudora works fine under System 7, except that you cannot switch applications when a dialog box is on the screen (you can under System 6). You can, however, switch when Eudora's "Progress" window is onscreen.
MacTCP 1.1 is now included in Eudora; it is fully System 7 compatible, safe for use with VM; it should be put in the Control Panels folder.
The Communications Toolbox is built in to System 7; you do not need to install it. You do need to drag the communications tools from the "Communications Folder" from the "Communications 1" diskette and into the "Extensions Folder".
NOTE FOR "LaserFix" USERS:
Eudora is not compatible with the "LaserFix" INIT. Attempts to contact the author of LaserFix have failed, so I do not know when the incompatibility will be fixed.
NOTE FOR "Virex" USERS:
Under some conditions, Eudora's attachment feature is incompatible with Virex's HyperCard virus checking. If you are using this feature of Virex, and your Macintosh has a System Error when downloading attachments, disable Virex's HyperCard virus check. Eudora is fully compatible with other virus protection software, such as Disinfectant.
FUTURE PLANS
I'm sorry to say that major development on Eudora is going to be shelved for a while. I will MOST CERTAINLY do bug fixes and may perhaps slip in new features as I have time. My management, however, feels it's time for me to do something new. They sign the checks, so...

Help, should you need it, on installing Eudora and MacTCP or the Communications Toolbox can be obtained by calling the Microconsulting Hotline (4-0608). There is a charge for on-site consulting.
Free POP accounts are available to faculty and staff; contact the CSO Accounting Office, (333-6760). Free accounts are also available to students; go to the CSO site in the basement of the English building (enter by the outside stairs on the south side of the building).
